Despite numerous complaints and grievances, the latest example of injustice in controversial interview exams occurred in Samsun with 22-year-old Doğuş Can Kavaklı. Kavaklı, who graduated from the Psychological Counseling and Guidance department last summer with a successful GPA, maintained this success by scoring 82 on the KPSS.

Kavaklı applied for the 'Social Assistance and Review Officer Recruitment' at the Asarcık District Governorate Social Assistance and Solidarity Foundation. Although he had by far the highest KPSS score among the 5 candidates interviewed, he learned upon the announcement of the results on September 28 that he had been eliminated and that someone with a score 10 points lower had been hired for the position.

Three days after receiving the results, Doğuş Can Kavaklı ended his life by jumping from the 6th floor of the dormitory where he had gone to collect his belongings. 12punto reached another person who participated in the scandalous interview that led Doğuş Can to give up on life. İsmet Onur Aksökek, just like Doğuş Can Kavaklı, took the interview exams at the Asarcık District Governorate. Aksökek described to 12punto the interview, which was marked by injustice and a lack of merit, and which tore Doğuş Can Kavaklı away from life.

‘WE VIEWED DOĞUŞ CAN AS THE WINNER, WE HAD ALL CONGRATULATED HIM’

We asked İsmet Onur Aksökek about the day of the interview and Doğuş Can Kavaklı. Pointing out that Doğuş Can's KPSS score was higher than the other candidates, Aksökek describes that day as follows:

“When the score list was announced on the day of the interview, I said, 'Brother, they will take you.' He said, 'I hope so.' There was quite a score difference. We congratulated Doğuş Can in advance. Unless a very unusual situation developed, Doğuş Can should have been appointed. What was discussed inside that led to the other candidate being appointed? What was discussed there? They have to tell us this. But they announced the interview results at 12 midnight without giving us any reason. We don't know based on what. It's clear it was based on the interview they conducted. There is no justification.”

HOW DID THE FATHER OF THE WINNING CANDIDATE KNOW ABOUT DOĞUŞ CAN’S INTERVIEW?

In his statements to 12punto, İsmet Onur Aksökek also raised a serious allegation that had not come to light until now. Aksökek stated that the moment Doğuş Can Kavaklı left the interview exam, the father of the candidate who won the exam called his daughter and said the following:

“It was already obvious that there was an injustice in the interview. In fact, they had taken Doğuş Can in for the interview first on the day it was held. Immediately after Doğuş Can left, the father of the friend who is currently appointed called and said to her, 'Doğuş Can's morale is low.' How and where did his father know this? In the room, there was Doğuş Can, who had entered the interview minutes earlier, and the officials conducting the interview. It was already decided who would be hired.”

Describing his own interview exam, Aksökek also provided information regarding the questions directed at him. Aksökek explained:

“My interview went average. Very detailed questions were asked. I am a graduate of political science and public administration. But very detailed questions were asked about the social services department. Then the announcement should have been made accordingly. Detailed questions about social service laws were asked. They asked about the villages of Samsun. They asked very detailed questions. Were these standard? Were they asked to everyone?”

‘THE INTERVIEW SHOULD BE CANCELLED, BUT MY CONSCIENCE WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO WORK THERE’

Stating, “I think the interview conducted was unjust,” Aksökek said, “Of course, I want this interview to be cancelled. I have also submitted my petition. Because there is injustice in this interview. There is the blood of a brother of ours. But if you ask me if I would take it again, I would not. A person's greatest justice is their conscience. Even if I were to enter and win, my conscience would not allow me to work there.”

‘INTERVIEW MEANS NEPOTISM’

One of the names we reached is Fethi Demirtaş, the father of Hamide Tuğçe Demirtaş, who took the same interview as Doğuş Can Kavaklı. Father Fethi Demirtaş, just like İsmet Onur Aksökek, stated that they viewed Doğuş Can as the winner on the day of the interview due to his high KPSS score and that they had congratulated him in advance. Fethi Demirtaş said:

“We also submitted our petition for this interview to be cancelled. The candidate with the second-highest score was our daughter. When we learned the scores, we were expecting Doğuş Can to get in. We even congratulated him there. Unfortunately, interview means nepotism. We have internalized this as a society. We still submitted our petition for the sake of the deceased. It has been 3 years since my daughter finished university. She is currently working for minimum wage. If the state exists, it will do what is necessary. The investigation is ongoing.”
