Threatening message from Istanbul Governor Gül to students exercising their right to protest: 'So you don't have to say I wish...'

Following these developments, a provocation warning came from Istanbul Governor Davut Gül.

Istanbul Governor Davut Gül shared a post on his social media account, issuing warnings to the youth.

"SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO SAY I WISH"

In his post, Governor Gül stated, "Dear Students, your safety and your future are more important than anything else.

Some provocateurs aim to drag you into illegal actions, pit you against the police, and steal your dreams. Be careful against such provocations.

Our hearts can never accept a young person being put in danger on the streets instead of being in education.

Protecting you is our responsibility. Please keep your distance from political and social groups that incite you.

Remember, such groups may want to use you for their own interests. Be careful so you don't have to say 'I wish'," he said.

Republican People's Party (CHP) Istanbul Provincial Chair Özgür Çelik responded to Governor Gül's post.

Çelik wrote the following:

“Mr. Governor, it does not befit a public official like you to show a velvet glove while brandishing an iron fist at our youth by adopting a supposedly compassionate attitude.

If you care about the safety of the youth, you should not turn a blind eye to our youth being pitted against our security forces through unlawful orders.

If you care about the future of the youth, you should be a bureaucrat of the nation, not a bureaucrat of those who attempt to tear them away from their teachers in the middle of the academic year, and who keep hundreds of them unjustly in prisons, separated from their families during the holidays.

If you care about the dreams of the youth, you should not prevent them from exercising their constitutional rights in their homeland and becoming individuals with 'free minds and free consciences.'

While the duty to protect our country's borders is not being fulfilled properly, I hope you know at least as well as we do that high school students exercising their democratic rights should not be treated as 'criminals.'

As representatives of a political party, we stand by our students to protect them from violence and to prevent them from coming face-to-face with law enforcement, and we will continue to do so.

Mr. Governor, we expect you to act with the responsibility that falls upon you so that our nation can exercise its constitutional rights safely, instead of politicizing the process with such statements.

We want to see you as a bureaucrat of our precious nation, not as a bureaucrat of an oppressive administration that steals the future of our youth.”
