Three coalition parties in TRNC support President Tatar's candidacy
Ahead of the presidential elections to be held in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in October, the coalition parties—the National Unity Party, the Democratic Party, and the Rebirth Party—have announced their support for the incumbent President Ersin Tatar, who is running as an independent candidate.
Ahead of the presidential elections to be held in the TRNC in October, three parties in the coalition have announced their support for the incumbent President Ersin Tatar, who is running as an independent candidate.
Coming together at the "Common Sense Consensus" event held in the capital Nicosia, the National Unity Party (UBP), the Democratic Party (DP), and the Rebirth Party (YDP) declared that they would support Tatar as their joint candidate in the presidential elections.
The event was attended by President Tatar, UBP Chairman Ünal Üstel, UBP Secretary-General Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu, YDP Chairman and Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı, YDP Secretary-General Erşah Sabit Yılmaz, DP Chairman and Minister of Tourism Fikri Ataoğlu, DP Secretary-General Serhat Akpınar, as well as cabinet members and members of parliament.
"ELECTION OF SURVIVAL"
YDP Chairman and Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı drew attention to the importance of the elections, stating, "This election is an election of survival for the Turkish Cypriots. This election is a choice between those who want to walk the same path as the motherland Turkey and those who follow the path of the USA."
Taking a clear stance against federation proposals, Arıklı said, "We say to those who want a federation: you have been negotiating for 60 years. What is left that you haven't been able to negotiate for 60 years? The federation model is finished for us and for the motherland. Now, a two-state solution based on equal sovereignty is being discussed."
"HE HAS CONTINUED ON HIS PATH WITHOUT BENDING"
DP Chairman Ataoğlu emphasized Tatar's national vision, stating, "President Mr. Tatar has defended the rightful cause of our people throughout his presidency without ever bending, buckling, or breaking." Ataoğlu added, "This unity is a strong and historic step taken for the survival of our state."
UBP Secretary-General Hasipoğlu said, "Tatar has opposed single sovereignty. In the model that the Republican Turkish Party wants to bring to the table today, there is single sovereignty, zero soldiers, and zero guarantees. Our people must know well what they are supporting."
Drawing attention to the message of unity they gave during the election process, Hasipoğlu said, "The unity and victory we will show in the presidential elections will be the harbinger of new victories. No matter what they do, we will not give up on our state and our sovereignty."
"OUR PATH IS THE PATH TO RECOGNIZING THE TRNC"
In his speech, President Tatar said, "For years, much suffering has been endured on these lands. Migrations occurred, losses were suffered. However, the Turkish Cypriot people never collapsed." Tatar stated, "We will continue our new vision. I am determined to keep my promise. Our path is the path to recognizing the TRNC."
Criticizing the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus, Tatar said, "Of course we have difficulties, our path is not easy. The attacks by the mentality in Southern Cyprus in recent months cannot intimidate us. By protecting our unity, we will overcome these difficult days as well. Our path is the path of the mujahid, our path is the path to the recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. I will never compromise on the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. I have full faith that I will emerge from the upcoming process successfully."
