TİP announces: Can Atalay has started a hunger strike! 'The time for patience has run out'
Elected Hatay MP Can Atalay has begun a 24-hour hunger strike on the day the new legislative session begins. Atalay stated that his action is a call for compliance with the Constitution and Constitutional Court rulings, and for the removal of the obstacles preventing him from performing his duties as a member of parliament.
The Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP) has announced that elected Hatay MP Can Atalay has begun a 24-hour hunger strike.
In a statement released by the party, it was noted that on the day the new legislative session begins, Atalay started the hunger strike to restore the representation rights of the people of Hatay and to make the voices of the working class and the poor heard. The statement included the following: “On this day when the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) opens and the new legislative session begins, our elected Hatay MP Can Atalay has started a 24-hour hunger strike to defend the usurped representation rights of the people of Hatay and to make heard the unheard voices of the laborers and the poor. We will win our rights, our country, and our future together.” the statement read.
Atalay also shared his statement regarding the decision via his X account through his lawyers.
Atalay used the following expressions in his statement:
“Dear citizens,
Hundreds of elected officials, politicians, journalists, and artists, including myself, are being held in prisons unjustly and unlawfully solely because of their political stances.
We are expected to accept everything that has happened, to treat these events as mere misfortune, and to remain silent.
I will not remain silent. The people of Hatay elected me to speak on their behalf and to hold those responsible accountable. I will not abandon that duty.
The time for patience has run out.
On this day when the Parliament opens, I am starting a 24-hour hunger strike to defend the usurped representation rights of the people of Hatay and to make heard the unheard voices of the laborers, the poor, all our people, and those who are hungry for justice.
This is also a call for compliance with the Constitution, the implementation of Constitutional Court rulings, and the removal of the obstacles preventing me from performing my duties.
I call on everyone who considers the country's problems their own to raise their voices. No one but ourselves will save us. We will win our rights, our country, and our future together.
Ş. Can Atalay - Elected Hatay MP”
