TIP speaks out against daylight saving time that condemns people to darkness in winter! 'Chasing money day and night'

The Workers' Party of Turkey (TIP) Ankara Provincial Organization gathered in front of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources to protest the daylight saving time policy. A group of approximately 60 people marched from the Emek district at 06:30 AM to the front of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources building.

"EVEN GANDALF WOULDN'T COME AT THIS HOUR"

During the protest, signs were carried that read, "The AKP's time is up: There is light at the end of the tunnel!", "Chasing money day and night", "A Night Out - EnerjiSA", "Even Gandalf wouldn't come at this hour", "Long live the equality of night and day: Turn the clocks forward!", "Sorry boss, we're hungover!"

The following statement was made in front of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources:

"In 2016, by the arbitrary decision of an energy minister whose only qualification was being the son-in-law of the palace, the country switched to permanent daylight saving time. This decision, which claimed to take advantage of more sunlight in a way that mocked our intelligence, has condemned us to darkness during winter months at the start of work and school hours.

This decision, made so that energy monopolies could profit more while workers struggle with exorbitant bills, has been implemented to this day by turning a deaf ear to all the objections and outcries of victimized citizens.

We witness with shame that those who made this decision do not hear the voices of those who have no other concern than their lives, their health, and their loved ones, and today we stand at the door of those responsible for this decision to shout this voice.

Young people, workers, brothers and sisters who set out on the roads not to learn or produce, but to survive… we know that if the greedy eyes of the bosses were satisfied, we could finish the days we start by seeing daylight before the sun sets.

We know that those who make this decision do not understand the difficulty of hitting the roads in the cold and dark to make ends meet. We know that those who govern this country, like all their other decisions, will make this decision not for the people of this country, but for the capitalists to whom they are indebted. However, we will all hold them accountable for the peace of mind lost by mothers and fathers as they send their children off in the dark, the peace of mind of women walking to work on streets not even illuminated by a single street lamp, and the peace of mind of those who start the day like this and count the minutes knowing they will not see daylight when the day ends.

If the winter months are to be dark and cold for us, they will also be noisy for the Ministry of Energy and the bosses it serves. We will reach the bright country we long for by drawing closer to each other and standing shoulder to shoulder.

Brothers and sisters whose voices reach us as we go to work or return from school, do not lose hope in the mornings of this country; we will illuminate the mornings darkened by the palace with our lanterns, our torches, and our struggle."
