TKP General Secretary Kemal Okuyan on Syria: 'It is being carved up in line with an imperialist agreement'

Jihadist groups led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) continue their attacks against the Assad administration in Syria.

HTS and jihadist groups have captured numerous cities in Syria since November 27.

Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) General Secretary Kemal Okuyan made assessments regarding the developments in Syria.

Sharing on his X account, Okuyan stated that Syria has been left to its own fate and commented, "Syria is being carved up in line with an imperialist agreement."

Addressing Turkey's stance, Okuyan asked, "Those who raise a hue and cry about the process, claiming 'a Kurdish state is being established' or 'HTS is collaborating with the PYD,' have served Erdoğan's Neo-Ottomanist policies for years, and they are doing so now as well. What if HTS does not collaborate with the PYD? Is the 'establishment of a Kurdish state' the beginning and end of everything happening in Syria today?

Or the question is this: If HTS, Nusra, Al-Qaeda, ISIS, the FSA, or their derivatives were to enter from the east of the Euphrates and exit from the Golan Heights, engulfing all of Syria in a bloody caliphate, and in the meantime, jihadist commanders said 'The Turks are our friends,' would you heave a sigh of relief?"

The full text of Okuyan's post is as follows:

1. There is nothing unknown about what is happening in Syria. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, one of the most important instruments of the imperialist aggression, which they wanted to polish by calling it the "New World Order," was to break up countries and divide the world into small units. Some welcomed this by saying "every nation has the right to be a state," while others tried to simplify it by saying "nation-states are being attacked." Since then, we have tried to explain that the issue is entirely class-based, and that multinational monopolies do not want any restrictions on capital movements, the exploitation of laborers, or the seizure of natural wealth. The issue was actually not national, but class-based.

It was obvious that the new units that emerged with the help of imperialist intervention and wars would serve imperialism. The state of the Balkans is visible. The operation called the "Arab Spring" was a project to take the operation that started in the Balkans to the Middle East by exploiting the justified reactions of poor peoples. Syria entered the Arab Spring under the Assad administration, which thought it would reach an agreement with the West through liberal policies that drew the reaction of poor peoples, and leaned on the comfort of its repression mechanisms. However, when a portion of the Syrians realized the danger created by the jihadists and the imperialist aggression that uses reactionary regimes in the region and began to resist, Assad took the lead of this resistance.

The reason why the AKP and other reactionary regimes in the region hated Assad was clear: If it weren't for Assad's determined stance, US imperialism and the jihadist coalition would have designed the entire region as they wished. Iran and Russia, undoubtedly in line with their own interests, strengthened this resistance, and they could not bring Syria down.

However, since the essence of the matter is not national but class-based, the laws of capitalism continued to operate. In war-weary Syria, not only were economic policies that the working people would support not implemented, but the Assad administration, thinking that "the danger had passed," began to increase the public's pessimism with neoliberal policies. On the other hand, BRICS, which is called the "resistance front" or more generally touted as an alternative to the alliance system led by the US, was also based on the capitalist exploitation system, just like the US and its allies. In capitalism, there are no principles; there is competition, conflict, and a partnership of interests.

What happened to the Palestinian people? Those who now hold the Palestinian resistance responsible for the picture that has emerged, those who say "they shouldn't have provoked Israel," know full well that there are class-based reasons behind the open support of the US and its allies for Israel, and the shy support of the rest of the world. Israel and Jewish capital in general are very powerful, while the people of Gaza are poor, and the small number of Palestinian bosses have mostly turned into collaborators who just look out for themselves.

2. Now Syria is also being left to its own fate. Or rather, it is being carved up in line with an agreement. This is an imperialist agreement. We have been saying for three months that this agreement was coming. Now, "agreement" is being uttered as if it were an ordinary thing in the mouths of the "leaders" who are emerging one by one under the protection of imperialism in Syria and are being polished by the monopoly media. It is said in exchange for bases, it is said in exchange for Ukraine. It is even said that "Iran and Russia could not agree either." It is said and said.

Imperialist war has unforeseen consequences, and so does imperialist peace. The process is still ongoing. Calculations do not hold, unexpected resistances emerge, and new infighting begins in the struggle for division. For this reason, a full stop cannot be put on it yet, and it should not be.

However, this must be known: It is impossible to stand against imperialism without looking at it from a class perspective, and it is impossible to defend the homeland without looking at it from a class perspective. This is the point that will be reached with "security-oriented" policies developed against this or that nation or sect, based on the conflicts of interest between capitalist countries.

As for Turkey... Those who raise a hue and cry about the process, claiming "a Kurdish state is being established" or "HTS is collaborating with the PYD," have served Erdoğan's Neo-Ottomanist policies for years, and they are doing so now as well. There will be those who do... Construction, food, energy, textile, automotive monopolies, banks... These are not Turkey; these are the ones who are sucking the marrow out of Turkey.

The capitalist class does not care about nations; it wants exploitation, it wants plunder, it wants easy movement, it wants to divide the laborers; the nation is not enough, it creates mini-nations, it incites tribes, it polishes them. There are many of these in Syria.

Now, this process must be opposed to the end, and the legitimization of this disgrace must be prevented. Then? The struggle will continue.

This fight is against imperialism, against reactionism, against exploitation. It does not end!
