Striking Syria commentary from TKP General Secretary Kemal Okuyan: There is a successful US-Israel operation underway, and Turkey has entered into this operation
TKP General Secretary Kemal Okuyan described the developments in Syria as an operation centered on the US and Israel, emphasizing that Turkey has become an active part of this process.
Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) General Secretary Kemal Okuyan answered questions from Nevzat Evrim Önal regarding Syria on the Komünist Bakış (Communist Perspective) program broadcast on soL TV.
Evaluating the events in Syria, Kemal Okuyan began the program by noting that the government in the country is changing rapidly. Attributing this to Syria being war-weary, Okuyan summarized the shifting of tribes with the words, "There is no betrayal here; the agreement was already fragile."
"A LOT CAN HAPPEN IN 24 HOURS"
Emphasizing that the old equation in the country no longer exists, Kemal Okuyan stated that it is not correct to "analyze" what is happening too quickly. He said, "A lot can happen in 24 hours."
Addressing claims that there is no agreement and that the meeting between Shara and Abdi did not go well, Okuyan underscored the uncertainties.
Drawing attention to what is currently unfolding, Kemal Okuyan said, "People say 'the US betrayed the Kurds.' Even if this 'Kurds' discourse is actually wrong, there was an SDF project where Kurds were dominant. First of all, the US does not betray anyone; it is an imperialist project and is a friend to money and its own interests."
Okuyan continued as follows:
"The SDF trusted the US and Israel, that is true. Well, those in Turkey who say this, who is Turkey trusting in Syria? This is forgotten: Turkey joined the international coalition formed against the Assad government to change the regime in Syria with US approval and cooperation; they acted together. The other partner in that coalition was Israel. Therefore, what opened Israel to Turkey is the desire of US and British imperialism for a regime change in Syria. Turkey was not an ineffective element here; it took on a role. But wait, isn't there cooperation with the US in all of this? Isn't Turkey leaning on the US and NATO? Therefore, Turkey is also leaning on someone. The SDF is not the only force attempting to cooperate with the US. Let this not be forgotten.
We said that HTS would not be able to provide unity when it came to power, and we still say the same. There is no state structure in place. We said that the reason for settling on Shara and his team was their desire to govern the country as they wish, and now this is being proven."
'THE REAL ISSUE IS WHAT THE AKP GOVERNMENT HAS GIVEN'
Stating that it is unclear where the mutual accusations of war crimes will lead, Okuyan said, "The SDF thought it would be powerful through its relations with Israel and the US and the power vacuum in Syria. They tried to settle in a place far beyond their strength. Actually, the US does not have a Syria project. However, the US needs an 'oppressed' SDF and 'oppressed' groups. Israel needs them too."
Stating that Shara is taking these steps for now by reaching an agreement with the US and Israel, Okuyan said that bargaining is taking place. Asking, "The real question is, what did Hakan Fidan give to his counterparts as Turkey's Minister of Foreign Affairs?", Kemal Okuyan reminded that the real subject in "this operation" is Fidan.
Pointing out that the US and Israel control the field, Okuyan referred to Fidan's insistence in a press conference last week that "we are in absolute harmony with the US," and said, "Turkey has a lot it can give."
He stated that Turkey is taking the lead in assuming a role within the new "security" framework in Europe, and even in becoming a power capable of softening tensions between the US and Europe. Okuyan said, "They are increasingly abandoning their neutral appearance in the Ukraine War, participating more in US and NATO-centered exercises in the Black Sea, and are more active in NATO."
'THE RACE FOR AMERICANISM BENEFITS THE US'
TKP General Secretary Okuyan said, "Even if not in this openness, it has been said, 'Leave the SDF, we will be a better partner in your regional projects.' Turkey has taken on roles that will put it ahead of other anti-Iranian Islamic countries regarding the extraction of the teeth and claws of Iran as an important power in the region."
Okuyan used the following expressions:
"Turkey has taken on a very serious role in breaking Iran's regional influence. Now they are afraid that the regime change in Iran will bear an Israeli signature. Therefore, they hit the brakes. But this is also a message that 'we also have a role in the downfall of Iran.'
What were we saying? The race for Americanism in the eyes of the US does not benefit anyone. Not the Turkish people, nor the Kurdish people. It benefits the Americanists and the US at most. Did this competition happen? It did. Social media is full of messages saying, 'From now on, we have declared the US an enemy.' Those who speak on behalf of the two peoples of the region, the communities that must establish brotherhood together, are conducting a debate through the US. This is very shameful.
As I said, the real issue is what the AKP government has given. For one thing, how will they account for what they did in Palestine? The thing called the Trump plan is a terrible thing, and we have a government that is happy because it is invited there. The equation is quite complex and has not been settled yet."
'THERE IS A COUNTRY IN THE HANDS OF JIHADISTS RIGHT NEXT TO US'
Touching on the possible effects of what is happening on the "process" in Turkey, Kemal Okuyan pointed out that it is too early to say "the process is over." Attributing the SDF's inactivity on the field to the message that was likely to pass through the leader of the terrorist organization PKK, Abdullah Öcalan, last week, Okuyan said, "With this message, it seems that Öcalan's role in the process will be pushed back. There will be a decrease in Öcalan's total weight and an increase in Barzani's influence, even if it does not reflect on the field immediately. Israel and the US's real ally is Barzani."
Drawing attention to the possibility of some "democratic" openings being made with the removal of the SDF, Okuyan said:
"This is forgotten: there is a country in the hands of jihadists right next to us. They were a broad coalition, they still are, and their largest border is with us. This will have an absolute effect on the ideological balances in Turkey because they are acting expansionistically. There are situations such as a segment of the secular circles being pro-NATO, and a segment welcoming what is happening. What did we say? There was anti-communism and anti-republicanism in the yeast of the process; their paths were opened. They want to put a period to the Republic.
Brotherhood cannot emerge from something that targets the Republic and is based on counter-revolutionary references. At a time when the US and Israel's regional goals are being realized and there is such dominance in Syria, they will not allow a Turkey that has 'solved the Kurdish question.' They will want a problem to remain. This issue was not about solving the Kurdish question anyway. The issue has nothing to do with the poor either. Everyone is busy marketing themselves to multinational monopolies."
'THERE IS A SUCCESSFUL ISRAELI OPERATION UNDERWAY, TURKEY HAS ENTERED INTO THIS OPERATION'
Emphasizing that HTS first established its media network in Syria, Okuyan said, "This is the AKP mind." Stating that "it is necessary to know that this situation is a success of the AKP, especially Hakan Fidan," Kemal Okuyan also underlined that this situation is being used as a move in the intra-regime "who will govern" fight, especially by Bilal Erdoğan.
Saying "There is a successful Israeli operation underway, and Turkey has entered into this operation," Okuyan stated that what is happening is progressing in the direction Israel wants.
Stating that it is not possible to achieve stability in Syria, even temporarily, and that the country will be plundered, Okuyan said, "To do this, there is no need for stability; there is a need for manageable conflicts."
'THE SOURCE OF THE KURDISH QUESTION REACHING THIS POINT LIES IN THE TRIBES'
Touching on the tribes, Kemal Okuyan said, "The tribal structure can never be progressive," and stated that trying to govern regions with pro-state tribal leaders cannot be a solution. Reminding that the Soviets broke the tribal structure, Okuyan said, "Nothing can be done without breaking this. The source of the Kurdish question reaching this point lies in this."
Pointing out that the AKP also praises this tribal structure, Kemal Okuyan said, "Salafi ideology was actually an official ideology in Turkey. Now it is also finding a source of legitimacy. They will tell the secular segments of Turkey, 'Our people finished off the terrorist organization that you are also sensitive about.' The developments in Syria will have ideological consequences for Turkey. In this respect, the AKP is right to be happy for now. On the other hand, we have to continue the struggle with our trust in people."
