While statements by AKP Group Deputy Chairman Abdülhamit Gül—asserting that there are no legal or constitutional obstacles to President Erdoğan's re-election and that Turkey needs a new, civilian constitution—remain on the political agenda, a notable assessment on the matter has come from the TKP.
In a statement released on the TKP's official social media account, Gül's remarks suggesting that Erdoğan's re-election could be facilitated by a parliamentary decision were criticized.
“An early election decision can be taken with 360 votes in Parliament”
The TKP statement noted that according to the current Constitution, the path that could pave the way for Erdoğan to run again lies in taking an early election decision with the votes of at least 360 deputies in Parliament.
The statement argued that one of the reasons for the confidence of AKP officials on this issue is the “atmosphere of severe decay into which bourgeois politics has been dragged.”
Drawing attention to the political landscape in Parliament, the TKP claimed that party transfers have become commonplace, programs and principles have been erased from politics, and personal calculations and periodic interests have become the deciding factors.
“Parliament has become open to the government's directives”
According to the TKP, the current parliamentary landscape presents a structure that is more open to the government's directives compared to the past.
The statement also recalled a proposal accepted last month with the “yes” votes of 468 deputies in a Parliament described as having “the most reactionary composition in its history.”
The TKP argued that the proposal in question “laid the groundwork for a Neo-Ottoman and reactionary constitution,” stating that the broad consensus formed in Parliament has increased the confidence of AKP officials.
TKP's call: “Let's not leave it to the seats”
At the end of the TKP statement, it was emphasized that the debates on Erdoğan's re-election and a new constitution should not be conducted solely through the distribution of seats in Parliament.
The party called on the public to fight together “against the policies of the Expanded People's Alliance,” starting from neighborhoods, workplaces, and schools.
The TKP concluded its statement with the following words:
“Let us build the future of our country together, without leaving it to seat counts.”
