Warning from TMMOB regarding Hatay: Buildings must be prepared according to earthquake acceleration

Musa Eskiocak, Hatay Provincial Representative of the Chamber of Geological Engineers of the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB), issued critical warnings on the second anniversary of the February 6 earthquakes. 

Stating that attention must be paid to the earthquake acceleration, which was previously taken as 0.5-0.6 but rose to 1.6 during the February 6 earthquakes, in the reconstruction of Hatay, Eskiocak said in a statement to the ANKA News Agency, "Our earthquake regulation needs to be reviewed. These new buildings to be constructed must be prepared according to these accelerations.”

In the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 11 provinces suffered massive destruction. At least 53 thousand 725 people lost their lives and 107 thousand 213 people were injured in the earthquakes. Hatay, which was among the 11 provinces, was recorded as the city where the greatest destruction occurred.

In the time that has passed since the earthquake in Hatay, according to official figures, the number of residences for which beneficiaries have been determined has been set at 46 thousand 140, along with 32 thousand 160 residences delivered across the province to date.
