Tomato alert! Being recalled from shelves

Williams Farms Repack LLC has decided to recall tomato products from the market due to the potential for Salmonella contamination. This decision was made following the detection of possible contamination in the supply chain on April 29.

According to a statement by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a warning issued by Southeast Tomato Distributors indicated that the tomatoes were sourced from H&C Farms and may have been contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. These tomatoes were repackaged and offered for sale in bulk cardboard cartons and three-count consumer trays.

Authorities emphasized that individuals who purchased these products should absolutely not consume the tomatoes. The tomatoes can be returned to the store where they were purchased for a full refund or disposed of safely.

WHAT IS SALMONELLA BACTERIA

Foods contaminated with Salmonella bacteria usually do not show any changes in appearance, taste, or smell. However, these bacteria can cause serious health problems, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of infection can appear 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food, and symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever may occur. While most healthy individuals recover within a few days, in some cases, the infection can be severe and may require hospitalization. The situation can be more dangerous for risk groups, especially infants, the elderly, pregnant women, and cancer patients. Additionally, some people may be carriers without showing any symptoms and can unknowingly transmit the bacteria to others.
