Tornado in Çorum renders 80 percent of buildings uninhabitable

The incident occurred around 15:30 when a tornado struck Oyaca village in the Sungurlu district, causing the roofs and walls of numerous houses to collapse, trees to be uprooted, and 5 citizens to be injured.

Upon notification to the 112 Emergency Call Center, AFAD, gendarmerie, health, and Sungurlu Municipality fire department teams were dispatched to the village. While two citizens were taken to the hospital by medical teams as a precaution, three others received outpatient treatment.

Significant material damage also occurred in some houses in the Kavşut village of the Sungurlu district. Damage assessment efforts by the teams are ongoing in both villages.

Çorum Governor Ali Çalgan, Sungurlu District Governor Mutlu Köksal, and Sungurlu Mayor Muhsin Dere conducted inspections in Kavşut village following their visit to Oyaca village and received information from the teams.

Making a statement after his inspections in Kavşut village, Governor Ali Çalgan said, "Today, we conducted inspections to see firsthand the damage and losses caused by the tornado and strong winds that primarily caused significant damage in the Oyaca and Kavşut villages of our province's Sungurlu district. We first went to our Oyaca village, and now we are in our Kavşut village. I would like to state that there is not as much damage here as in our other village.

Thank God, we have no loss of life in either of our villages. We have 5 injured; two are under treatment and are being hosted for control purposes, but they are not in life-threatening condition. The electrical power problem has been resolved. Electricity cannot be provided only to houses that have sustained heavy damage, as their wiring could cause problems. The damage in Oyaca village is significant; 80 percent of the buildings in the village are in an uninhabitable condition.

We will host them tonight in the village hall and in the AFAD tents we have brought. Their food and beverage needs are being met.

Accommodation was offered in the Sungurlu district, but they will stay in the village as they do not want to leave. We are in our Oyaca village with all our institutions. Our gendarmerie personnel have also taken security measures. Our AFAD President also called and said they are ready for any kind of support. We do not have a need at the moment, and we thanked them. Tomorrow, damage assessments will be carried out in these two villages and in other villages if there is any. We will begin working to heal the wounds as soon as possible," he said.
