Trabzon Airport runway at risk of collapse!

It has been noted that the Trabzon Airport runway has undergone maintenance 6 times in the last 3 years, and concerns have been raised regarding the risk of collapse following the maintenance performed on December 15.

Geological Engineer Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş stated that Trabzon Airport is at risk due to coastal erosion and ground issues.

Expressing that the red clay in the runway foundation causes swelling, bulging, cracking, and settling with rainfall, Bektaş emphasized that constant maintenance work is not a sustainable solution and that the runway foundation must be improved.

Furthermore, he noted that the clayey soil beneath the runway is sensitive to water and that water runoff from the slopes could lead to collapses and bumps.

SHOULD BE DIVERTED TO RIZE OR ORDU

Bektaş argued that the airport should be completely closed, flights should be diverted to Rize or Ordu, and that Trabzon Airport should be shut down to address and rectify the high-risk areas.
