Tragic semi-truck accident in Hatay: 6 dead

In the Dörtyol district of Hatay, on the Dörtyol-Payas highway, a semi-truck with license plate 31 AGU 531, driven by Şükrü K., crossed into the opposite lane and collided with a car with license plate 31 AJP 037, driven by Mehmet Sönmez.

Car driver Mehmet Sönmez, his wife Zeynep, their children Eray and Ecrin Sönmez, his father-in-law Zeki (64), and his mother-in-law Döndü Kara (62) lost their lives in the accident, while one of the driver's children, Melek Su Sönmez (8), was injured.

The truck driver, Şükrü K., was taken into custody.

Upon notification of the situation, numerous health, police, and fire department teams were dispatched to the scene of the accident.

The Hatay Governor's Office issued a statement regarding the incident on its X account. The statement from the Governor's Office is as follows:

"On 26.03.2024, a semi-truck driven by a driver named Ş.K., traveling on the D817-03 State Highway in the direction of Dörtyol-Payas in front of Nursan Hospital, lost control of the vehicle, crossed into the opposite direction, and collided directly with a car traveling in the opposite direction. In the accident resulting from the collision, 6 of our citizens in the car lost their lives, and 1 citizen was injured.

A judicial investigation has been initiated regarding the matter, and the driver Ş.K. has been taken into custody.

We wish God's mercy upon our citizens who lost their lives, offer our condolences to their relatives, and wish a speedy recovery to our injured citizen."
