Trump had announced his support... Zelensky's message from Istanbul: 'I am expecting Putin in Turkey on Thursday'
Ukrainian President Zelensky, who accepted the Istanbul proposal for the resumption of peace talks with Russia, invited Russian President Putin to meet in Turkey in a statement on his social media account. Former US President Trump also supported the calls.
Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed that direct and unconditional talks aimed at ending the war with Ukraine be resumed in Istanbul on May 15. This proposal was expressed during a phone call with AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. It was stated that Erdoğan also said, "Turkey is ready to host the negotiations as it has always been."
'UKRAINE SHOULD NOT MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY'
Former US President Donald Trump made statements supporting the peace initiative. Stating that he welcomed Putin's Istanbul call, Trump said, "Ukraine should accept this opportunity immediately. Russian President Putin is being portrayed as not wanting a ceasefire, but he actually wants to sit at the table to end the war. This meeting to be held in Turkey could be historic."
CLEAR ANSWER FROM ZELENSKY: I AM EXPECTING HIM IN TURKEY
Following all these developments, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also announced that he accepted the proposal. In a post on his social media account, Zelensky said, "We hope for a full and permanent ceasefire starting from tomorrow. I will be waiting for Putin in Turkey on Thursday."
DIPLOMATIC TRAFFIC INTENSIFIES
Since the Russia-Ukraine War began in February 2022, Turkey has attempted to bring the parties together many times. Limited progress was made in previous meetings held in Istanbul and Antalya, but a permanent ceasefire could not be achieved.
