Tsunami statement from Kandilli: Is there a risk for Turkey?

Tsunami statement from Kandilli: Is there a risk for Turkey?

A written statement was issued by the Kandilli Observatory following the earthquake that occurred on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula.

The observatory's statement read as follows:

On July 30, 2025, at 02:24 TSI, an Mw 8.8 magnitude, shallow-focus earthquake with reverse faulting characteristics occurred off the southeastern coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. The earthquake took place on the Kuril-Kamchatka subduction zone at a depth of approximately 20.7 km.

Tsunami warnings were issued by the UNESCO-IOC ICG/PTWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC), particularly for the Russian Federation, Japan, Hawaii, and many Pacific countries.

Tsunami waves of 30-50 cm were observed on the coasts of Japan, 90 cm in the open sea, and up to approximately 1.5-1.7 m in Hawaii.

Monitoring and information messages will continue to be published until the relevant tsunami service providers report that the tsunami danger has ended.

The KRDAE Regional Earthquake-Tsunami Monitoring and Evaluation Center is closely following this event in coordination with international systems.

There is no tsunami risk for our country's coasts regarding this earthquake."
