Tsunami warning from Celal Şengör

Prof. Dr. Celal Şengör made important statements at the conference titled “The Expected Istanbul Earthquake and Its Effects on Marmaraereğlisi,” held in the Marmaraereğlisi district of Tekirdağ. Stating that the Marmara region carries a high risk of a major earthquake, Şengör explained that the North Anatolian Fault Line extends from Istanbul to Marmaraereğlisi and that the movement of this fault directly affects the earthquake risk in the region.

Şengör underlined that one must be realistic, especially regarding the earthquake in Istanbul. Stating that Marmaraereğlisi is under great danger, Şengör noted that a 7.6 magnitude earthquake would increase the risks in the region and that a major tsunami could occur in the event of a landslide.

TOUCHED ON THE TSUNAMI DANGER

Prof. Dr. Celal Şengör warned that a major tsunami could occur in the event of a possible landslide in Marmaraereğlisi. According to research, it was stated that in the event of a major landslide in the Eastern Marmara, the wave height could reach up to 7 meters. In research conducted at the request of the Turkish Air Force, a wave height of up to 7 meters was calculated in Yeşilköy, in the area close to the Air Force Academy.

'WE HAVE TO BE REALISTIC'

Şengör revealed the dimensions of the disaster by saying, “We have to be realistic.” He said, “I am thinking about the disaster that will happen in Istanbul; it will be terrible. I am not sure that measures have been taken regarding this,” and stated that the public needs to approach the situation realistically. Pointing out that measures must be taken in advance for potential disasters, Şengör said, “We cannot deceive ourselves by saying everything is rosy.”
