Tsunami warning from Kandilli

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir was also felt in surrounding provinces. The Kandilli Observatory issued a warning within 7 minutes due to the risk of a tsunami. Authorities warned citizens to head to higher ground in the event of tsunami signs such as sea recession.

Tsunami warning from Kandilli

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir. Following the earthquake, the Kandilli Observatory and AFAD quickly sent out a warning message due to the risk of a tsunami. While the earthquake was felt in surrounding provinces, citizens in Istanbul, İzmir, Kocaeli, Kırklareli, Aydın, Manisa, and Denizli also felt the tremors.

AFTERSHOCKS CONTINUED

Following the initial earthquake, a 4.6 magnitude aftershock occurred, and a total of 20 aftershocks were recorded. Five of these aftershocks were above 4.0 in magnitude. Before the earthquake, 43 foreshocks were experienced throughout the night.

TSUNAMI WARNING AND ADVICE TO HEAD TO HIGHER GROUND

The Kandilli Observatory sent a warning message to AFAD and international centers within 7 minutes of the earthquake due to the risk of a tsunami.

Experts, reminding that active fault lines in the region have caused major destruction in the past, are warning citizens against signs of a tsunami, such as sea recession, especially in coastal areas. Authorities have advised citizens to move to higher ground.
