Tuğrul Türkeş, Head of the Turkish Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) and AKP MP, visited the Gezi trial convicts, including Osman Kavala, Can Atalay, Çiğdem Mater, and Tayfun Kahraman, in prison.

Sharing his impressions of the prison visit with 12punto, Türkeş stated that he met separately with Osman Kavala, Can Atalay, and Tayfun Kahraman at Silivri Prison, and with Çiğdem Mater and Mine Özerdem at Bakırköy Prison, and then explained the following:

"They are all in high spirits; I did not see any of them broken. They are in command of their subjects and are following developments. We talked about the issues they are concerned about and their judicial processes. It is impossible to put 3-5 people who are nothing alike in the same bag and describe them as members of the same group. Osman Kavala is one type of person, Tayfun Kahraman is another, and Can Atalay is another. This situation alone reveals that it is wrong to portray them as members of the same gang. None of us held the same political views, and that is the sweetest part of it. People with different political views coming together and talking under different conditions is important in itself."

Using the phrase "I am glad I did it" regarding his visit, which had previously sparked various debates and reactions, Türkeş continued as follows:

"This visit was not part of my search for justice. It came up additionally. My main goal is to ensure that the judicial processes in our country are conducted within the framework of the law. This is being debated, which is a good thing. To prevent the subject from being sensationalized, I will only share my impressions with those concerned and those who are curious from now on."

Finally, Türkeş said, "If I was able to give them a breath of fresh air for 1 hour, how happy for me."
