TÜİK announces: Turkey's population could fall to 55 million by 2100

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has updated its population projections based on the 2023 Address-Based Population Registration System (ADNKS) results in accordance with its Revision Policy. According to the low-fertility scenario, which assumes that the rapid downward trend in fertility indicators will continue, Turkey's population could fall below 55 million by the year 2100.

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has updated its population projections based on the 2023 Address-Based Population Registration System (ADNKS).

Accordingly, while the total fertility rate was 2.38 in 2001, it showed a stable trend at the replacement level of 2.10 between 2003 and 2014, after which it declined sharply to 1.51 in 2023.

POPULATION TO FALL BELOW 77 MILLION BY 2100

According to the main scenario, which assumes that the current structure of demographic indicators will continue, Turkey's population, which was 85 million 372 thousand 377 in 2023, is expected to reach 88 million 188 thousand 221 in 2030 and 93 million 774 thousand 618 in 2050. The Turkish population is projected to increase until the mid-2050s and then begin to decline, with it expected to fall below 77 million by 2100.

POPULATION COULD FALL BELOW 55 MILLION

According to the low-fertility scenario, which assumes that the rapid downward trend in fertility indicators will continue, Turkey's population is estimated to reach its peak size of 89 million 959 thousand 486 in 2044, and is expected to fall below 55 million by 2100.

ONE IN EVERY 3 PEOPLE WILL BE ELDERLY

In Turkey, 1 in every 3 people is expected to be elderly by 2075. According to the 2023 ADNKS results, the proportion of the elderly population in the total population exceeded 10% for the first time. According to the main scenario, the elderly population ratio is expected to reach 23.1% in 2050, 31.7% in 2075, and 33.6% in 2100.
