TÜİK releases 'Expected Years of Schooling Bulletin': Istanbul has the longest duration of education

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has released the Expected Years of Schooling Bulletin for 2023. Accordingly, the expected duration that an individual of primary school starting age in Turkey will spend in the education system until they complete the highest level of education was 17.9 years in 2023. The expected duration that an individual of primary school age will spend in education until they complete secondary education was calculated as 12.3 years.

This decline, which has been observed since 2021, was more rapid among men than women. In 2023, the highest expected duration of education at the provincial level was in Istanbul with 20.3 years. Istanbul was followed by Karabük with 19.7 years, Ankara with 19.6 years, and Rize and Erzincan with 19.1 years. During the same period, the provinces with the lowest expected duration of education were Muş and Şırnak with 14.9 years, followed by Ağrı and Şanlıurfa with 15.1 years, and Mardin with 15.8 years.

The top 5 provinces where the expected duration of education increased the most between 2019 and 2023 were Gümüşhane with 8.3 percent, Hakkari with 4.6 percent, Van with 2.5 percent, Diyarbakır with 2.1 percent, and Ağrı with 1.7 percent. In the same period, the provinces where the expected duration of education decreased the most were Eskişehir with 10.4 percent, Çankırı with 10.3 percent, Yalova with 10 percent, Antalya with 9.6 percent, and Muğla with 8.6 percent.

Across Turkey, the expected duration of education in 2023 was 18.4 years for women and 17.6 years for men. The highest expected duration of education for both genders occurred in Istanbul. For men, Istanbul was followed by Karabük, Ankara, Erzincan, and Bayburt; for women, the ranking was Karabük, Tunceli, Ankara, and Rize.

Ağrı, the province where the expected duration of education is lowest for men, was followed by Şırnak, Muş, Şanlıurfa, and Mardin, while the provinces with the lowest expected duration of education for women were Muş, Şanlıurfa, Şırnak, Ağrı, and Bitlis.

The gender parity index is calculated by the ratio of the female expected duration of education value to the male expected duration of education value. The gender parity index was 1.05 in 2023. The index, which was 0.97 in 2018, showed an increase of 0.08 points in 2023, indicating a shift in favor of women. The 5 provinces with the highest index were Tunceli and Iğdır with 1.12, Çanakkale with 1.10, and Bartın and Çankırı with 1.09. The provinces with the lowest gender parity index were Bitlis, Şanlıurfa, and Siirt with 0.95, Muş with 0.96, and Batman with 0.98.
