TÜİK’s World Population Day bulletin: World population exceeds 8.23 billion, elderly population ratio in Turkey is above the world average

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has published its current population bulletin, compiled from United Nations data, on the occasion of World Population Day. The bulletin states that as of mid-2025, the world population has reached 8 billion 231 million 613 thousand 70 people.

The United Nations declared July 11, 1987, the date when the world population reached 5 billion, as "World Population Day" in 1989. The data published by TÜİK shows that global population growth continues and that differences in age structures between countries are becoming more pronounced.

WHERE DOES TURKEY STAND COMPARED TO THE AVERAGES?

According to the bulletin, the child population ratio worldwide in 2025 was calculated at 29.3 percent. In Turkey, the ratio of the child population in the 0-17 age group to the total population remained at 24.8 percent, below the world average. While the country with the highest child population ratio was the Central African Republic at 56.2 percent, it was followed by Niger and Somalia. The lowest ratio was recorded in South Korea at 12.9 percent.

Turkey also remained below the world average in the youth population indicator. According to United Nations estimates, the average share of the 15-24 age group in the world population was 15.6 percent. The youth population ratio in Turkey was calculated at 14.8 percent. In this area, the highest ratio was seen in South Sudan at 23.3 percent, while the lowest ratio was recorded in Monaco at 8.8 percent.

In terms of the elderly population ratio, Turkey exceeded the world average. While the ratio of the population aged 65 and over worldwide was 10.4 percent, this ratio was determined to be 11.1 percent in Turkey. The country with the highest elderly population ratio was Monaco at 36 percent; Japan and Italy followed this country.

Fertility data also drew attention. While the world average total fertility rate for 2025 was announced as 2.24 children per woman, this rate remained at 1.42 children in Turkey. The highest total fertility rate was calculated in Chad at 5.94 children, and the lowest rate was calculated in South Korea at 0.75 children.

It was observed that Turkey is above the world average in life expectancy indicators. Life expectancy at birth for 2025 was estimated at 73.5 years worldwide. This duration was 70.9 years for men and 76.2 years for women. Life expectancy at birth in Turkey was recorded as 75.5 years for men and 80.7 years for women.
