Turkey files objection to ECHR regarding Demirtaş

Selahattin Demirtaş was arrested on November 4, 2016, as part of a terrorism investigation following the events of October 6-8, 2014. In the indictments, Demirtaş, who was found guilty of "establishing and managing a terrorist organization," "making propaganda for a terrorist organization," and "inciting the public to hatred and hostility," faced a prison sentence of up to 42 years.

APPLICATION FROM TURKEY TO THE ECHR

Turkey has requested that the ruling concerning former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş, who is imprisoned on terrorism charges, be reviewed by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) Grand Chamber.

WHAT IS THE ECHR GRAND CHAMBER?

The ECHR Grand Chamber is the Court's highest decision-making body. The Grand Chamber consists of 17 judges and hears cases that are significant, complex, or critical in terms of jurisprudence.

A case typically goes to the Grand Chamber when one of the parties objects to a Chamber judgment and requests a re-examination. However, this request is only accepted in exceptional circumstances.

The decisions rendered by the Grand Chamber are final and binding; there is no further avenue for appeal.

Therefore, Grand Chamber decisions play a decisive role in the interpretation of the European Convention on Human Rights and serve as a guide for member states.
