Turkey's population has been announced: What percentage of the population is male and what percentage is female?

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has published the 2023 results of the Address Based Population Registration System.

Accordingly, the population increased by 92 thousand 824 people compared to the previous year, reaching 85 million 372 thousand 377 people. The male population was 42 million 734 thousand 71, while the female population was 42 million 638 thousand 306. In other words, men made up 50.1% of the total population, and women made up 49.9%.

According to the Address Based Population Registration System (ADNKS) results, the foreign population residing in our country decreased by 253 thousand 293 people compared to the previous year, becoming 1 million 570 thousand 543 people. Men made up 48.6% of this population, and women made up 51.4%.

POPULATION GROWTH RATE

The annual population growth rate was 7.1 per thousand in 2022, while it was 1.1 per thousand in 2023.

WHAT IS ISTANBUL'S POPULATION?

Istanbul's population decreased by 252 thousand 27 people compared to the previous year, becoming 15 million 655 thousand 924 people. Istanbul, where 18.34% of Turkey's population resides, was followed by Ankara with 5 million 803 thousand 482 people, İzmir with 4 million 479 thousand 525 people, Bursa with 3 million 214 thousand 571 people, and Antalya with 2 million 696 thousand 249 people.

PROVINCE WITH THE LOWEST POPULATION

Bayburt became the province with the lowest population with 86 thousand 47 people. Bayburt was followed by Tunceli with 89 thousand 317 people, Ardahan with 92 thousand 819 people, Gümüşhane with 148 thousand 539 people, and Kilis with 155 thousand 179 people.

MEDIAN AGE OF THE POPULATION

The median age is the age of the person in the middle when the people forming the population are sorted from youngest to oldest, from newborn to the oldest. The median age is also one of the important indicators used in interpreting the age structure of the population.

The median age in Turkey, which was 33.5 in 2022, rose to 34 in 2023. When examined by gender, it was observed that the median age rose from 32.8 to 33.2 for men, and from 34.2 to 34.7 for women.

PROVINCE WITH THE HIGHEST AND LOWEST MEDIAN AGE

When looking at the distribution of median age by province, it was observed that Sinop had the highest median age value with 42.8. Sinop was followed by Giresun and Kastamonu with 42.4. On the other hand, Şanlıurfa was the province with the lowest median age with 21.2. Şanlıurfa was followed by Şırnak with 22.7 and Ağrı with 24.

MEDIAN AGE FOR WOMEN AND MEN

When the distribution of median age by province and gender is examined, Sinop was the province with the highest median age for men with 41.9, while Şanlıurfa was the province with the lowest median age with 20.7. For women, Sinop was again the province with the highest median age value with 43.8, while Şanlıurfa was the province with the lowest median age value with 21.6.

MOST OF THOSE WHO HAVE NEVER MARRIED ARE MEN

When the distribution of marital status by gender in our country between 2009 and 2023 is examined, it was observed that the rate of those who have never married is higher in men than in women, and the rate of those whose spouse has died and those who are divorced is higher in women than in men. On the other hand, it was observed that the rate of married people, who make up the vast majority, was close to each other for both genders in 2009 and 2023.

WORKING-AGE POPULATION

The proportion of the population in the 15-64 age group, defined as the working age, was 66.5% in 2007 and 68.3% in 2023. On the other hand, while the proportion of the population in the 0-14 age group, defined as the child age group, decreased from 26.4% to 21.4%, the proportion of the population aged 65 and over increased from 7.1% to 10.2%.

AGE DEPENDENCY RATIO

The total age dependency ratio, which shows the number of children and elderly individuals per working-age individual, fell from 46.8% in 2022 to 46.3% in 2023.

While the child dependency ratio, which expresses the number of children per working-age individual, decreased from 32.3% to 31.4%, the elderly dependency ratio, which measures the number of elderly individuals per working-age individual, increased from 14.5% to 15%. In other words, in Turkey in 2023, every 100 people of working age are supporting 31.4 children and 15 elderly people.

HOW MANY PEOPLE PER SQUARE KILOMETER?

The "number of people per square kilometer," defined as population density, was 111 people across Turkey. Istanbul became our province with the highest population density with 3 thousand 13 people per square kilometer. After Istanbul, Kocaeli with 582 people and İzmir with 373 people were the provinces with the highest population density.

On the other hand, the province with the lowest population density was Tunceli, as it was in the previous year, with 12 people per square kilometer. Tunceli was followed by Ardahan with 19 people and Erzincan with 21 people.

The population density of Konya, which ranks first in terms of surface area, was 60, while the population density of Yalova, which has the smallest surface area, was 360.
