Turkish troops to fight against Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab terrorist organization: 'They are trying to overthrow the government'

The Turkish Armed Forces will combat the Al-Shabaab terrorist organization in Somalia.

With the motion adopted in the TBMM on July 27, it was decided that the TSK would fight against terrorism, piracy, smuggling, and illegal fishing in Somalia. The previous motion only covered the fight against pirates.

THEY ENGAGE IN PIRACY

According to a report by Emin Özgönül from Sözcü; Saadet Party Bursa MP Kani Torun, who previously served as an ambassador in Somalia, drew attention to the Al-Shabaab organization in that country.

Shortly after this warning, the organization attacked Lido Beach and the View Hotel in Mogadishu, carrying out a suicide bombing and opening fire on those at the beach, killing 32 people.

Torun stated, “12 percent of world trade passing through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal is under threat from pirates in Somalia. Even though political order has been established, the terrorist organization Al-Shabaab continues its attacks on civilians and government officials. The pro-independence movement in Somaliland also disrupts order. Somalia was territory attached to the Ottoman Empire's Habesh Eyalet starting from 1530. It declared its independence in 1960. A military coup took place in 1969. There was a tribal conflict between 1991 and 2006. Then, Al-Shabaab rose up against the administration.”

The terrorist organization called the “Mujahideen Youth Movement-Al-Shabaab” is fighting to overthrow the government in Somalia. Al-Shabaab, which is recognized as a 'terrorist organization' by many Western states, has 15 thousand armed militants. The organization previously killed 67 people in a bombing in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. In an attack it carried out on a university in Kenya, 148 people lost their lives. It also caused the death of 76 people with an attack during the 2022 World Cup.

THE ORGANIZATION IS AFFILIATED WITH AL-QAEDA

Al-Shabaab was founded in 2006 after the Islamic Courts Union was dispersed by the Ethiopian army. The organization, which claims to be waging jihad against enemies of Islam and has declared its allegiance to Al-Qaeda, enforces Sharia law in the regions it controls.
