Two cargo ships collide in the North Sea: Many people missing

In a statement from the German Central Command for Maritime Emergencies, it was stated that the cargo ships named "Polesie" and "Verity" collided at 05:00 local time, 22 kilometers southwest of the island of Heligoland and 31 kilometers northeast of the island of Langeoog.

The statement noted that the Verity is presumed to have sunk as a result of the collision, that many people are missing, and that numerous ships and a helicopter are participating in search and rescue operations.

The statement reported that one person has been rescued from the sea and that a D0228 sensor aircraft is conducting reconnaissance over the area to gather more information about the incident.

The statement indicated that the Polesie, which had 22 crew members on board, remains afloat.

According to a report by the Bild newspaper, the United Kingdom-flagged cargo ship "Verity" was traveling from Bremen, Germany, to Immingham, England, while the Bahamas-flagged "Polesie" was en route from Hamburg to La Coruña, Spain.

The North Sea is a sea of the Atlantic Ocean located between Great Britain, Denmark, Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France.
