UN Assistance Mission for Iraq mandate extended for the final time
In a vote at the UN Security Council (UNSC), the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq was extended until December 31, 2025. The decision was adopted unanimously.
It has been decided that the mandate of the United Nations (UN) Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) will be extended for one final year.
In a vote held at the UN Security Council (UNSC), the decision to extend UNAMI's mandate until December 31, 2025, was adopted unanimously.
Speaking after the vote, Deputy Permanent Representative of the United States Robert Wood pointed out that Iraq has undergone significant changes in recent years. Stating that UNAMI's mandate has been extended for the last time, Wood indicated that the mission has fulfilled its duties.
Wood noted that during the transition period, UNAMI will provide assistance in areas such as technical support for elections and the protection of human rights.
In addition to ensuring security, UNAMI, which has a mission to assist the government in Iraq's development and reconstruction, also has the task of monitoring human rights violations in Iraq.
UNAMI was established by UNSC Resolution 1500 on August 14, 2003, following the invasion of Iraq by the US and allied forces.
