Uncertainty continues at Istanbul University: No Scientific Committee report
The potential relocation and renovation process at Istanbul University's historic Beyazıt Campus continues to cause concern and raise questions among students. Students from the Faculties of Law and Economics, stating that the process regarding the future of the campus is not transparent, have called on authorities to make urgent and concrete statements.
Istanbul University students continue their efforts to seek their rights, aiming to ensure that academic activities continue without interruption and that concerns regarding the future of the campus are addressed.
“A Process Managed Through Backstage Information”
Students, who took action following weeks of rumors on campus regarding relocation and extensive renovations, are complaining that the process has proceeded through backstage information rather than official channels since the beginning.
In the first meeting held with the Law Faculty Dean's Office, it was reported that there was a possibility of renovation but that the decision had not been finalized, and a promise was made that an official statement would be issued within a week. However, after official statements failed to meet expectations, students protested the situation by collecting information request petitions and organizing peaceful demonstrations.
Lack of Communication Acknowledged
Remarkable details emerged during the meeting held between student representatives and the Law Faculty Dean's Office on June 25, 2026.
12punto had accessed the tender record, which was awarded to Zem İnşaat Taahhüt AŞ for 530 million 336 thousand 922 TL and conducted via the “exception” method under Law No. 4734.
According to the new information obtained, the Dean's Office acknowledged that the failure to provide a timely official statement to students at the beginning of the process was a “lack of communication.”
On the other hand, it was stated that the Scientific Committee report regarding the earthquake has not yet reached the dean's office; it was expressed that the renovation tender was carried out in advance “to avoid losing time” against the possibility of a potential reinforcement decision by the Scientific Committee.
Furthermore, it was conveyed that they were only informed of the potential renovation plan after the Construction Affairs Department's notification to “vacate the campus.”
Concrete Demands from Students
The fact that a tender was issued with such a large budget while the Scientific Committee report is not yet available deepens doubts among students regarding the reliability of the process.
Students are demanding that the university administration conduct the process transparently and share the Scientific Committee report prepared regarding the earthquake with the public.
