The first hearing of the case against Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor and CHP presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was arrested as part of an investigation into the municipality and faces up to 2,352 years in prison, will be held on March 9.

Journalist and former CHP deputy Mustafa Balbay made remarkable assessments regarding the İmamoğlu case during a live broadcast. Speaking on Meltem TV, Balbay stated that the trial would not follow a conventional course and expressed that the process could change direction at an unexpected moment.

Recalling some past judicial decisions, Mustafa Balbay used the following expressions:

"They said Fatih Altaylı was released; we were not expecting it. There was no suspicion of flight, and the potential prison time for the case was clear. A verdict was reached, and it was stated that detention would continue. Then, one evening, his release was decided. Who believes that the local court made that decision on its own initiative out of the blue?

These cases will result in a break at a very unexpected moment. Perhaps the government itself will say the purpose has been served or will think there is nothing left to gain."
