'Unknown language' debate in the Turkish Parliament
A debate over an "unknown language" took place in the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) Planning and Budget Committee between DEM Party Ağrı MP Sırrı Sakık and the committee chair, AKP Samsun MP Mehmet Muş.
Taking the floor during the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) Planning and Budget Committee meetings, DEM Party Ağrı MP Sırrı Sakık stated that when Kurdish is spoken in Parliament, it is recorded in the minutes as a foreign language.
Following Sakık's remarks, Planning and Budget Committee Chair Mehmet Muş said, “According to our Constitution, the language of the state is Turkish. Therefore, whether you use a Kurdish expression in this parliament or a French expression, all foreign languages are recorded as ‘a language other than Turkish'.
This is not an attitude directed against Kurdish or any other language.
Since our official language is Turkish, for example, if I were to say ‘I love you' now, it would still be recorded in the minutes as an 'unknown language',” he stated.
