US court ruling on Eylem Tok

A notable development has occurred in the ongoing extradition process in the US concerning Eylem Tok and her son Timur Cihantimur. Turkey's extradition request has been temporarily halted by a federal court decision until the appeals process is concluded.

Turkey had filed an extradition request for the mother and son, who were determined to have fled to the US following the 2024 accident in Istanbul's Eyüpsultan district that claimed the life of Oğuz Murat Acı.

DECISION FROM THE US FEDERAL COURT

According to information shared by journalist Emrullah Erdinç, the Rhode Island Federal Court overseeing the case has ruled that Eylem Tok's extradition to Turkey cannot be executed until the appeals process is finalized.

The court stated that there are certain constitutional issues within the file regarding the extradition request. Therefore, it was stated that the file must be re-examined during the appeals process.

"PROBABLE CAUSE" DEBATE IN THE FILE

The court's decision specifically highlighted debates regarding "probable cause" in relation to the arrest warrant that serves as the basis for the extradition request.

It was also reported that assessments were made suggesting that some information contained in the file was incomplete. For these reasons, the court ordered the file to be reviewed on appeal.

WILL NOT BE EXTRADITED TO TURKEY

In line with the decision, it was stated that Eylem Tok will remain in custody in the US until the appeals process is completed.

It was noted that the extradition process to Turkey will not be carried out during this period.

FATAL ACCIDENT

In the accident that occurred in Eyüpsultan Kemerburgaz in March 2024, a car driven by Timur Cihantimur, who was 17 at the time, struck an ATV. Oğuz Murat Acı lost his life in the accident.

THEY HAD FLED ABROAD AFTER THE ACCIDENT

It was revealed that after the accident, Eylem Tok and Timur Cihantimur left the scene, first traveled to Egypt, and subsequently moved to the US.
