Statement from the US on South Korea

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s declaration of martial law triggered a political crisis in the country. However, it was lifted after only 6 hours. The US government announced that it is monitoring the developments closely.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol had declared martial law, citing that the opposition was engaged in anti-state activities. 

However, following an emergency meeting of the National Assembly and objections from political parties, a step was taken to revoke the martial law decision. Shortly after announcing this decision, Yoon stated that the implementation had ended.

FIRST STATEMENT FROM THE US FRONT

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken issued a written statement regarding the developments in South Korea. Blinken expressed that they “welcomed” Yoon’s decision to cancel the martial law. He also pointed out that political disputes must be resolved peacefully and within the framework of the rule of law.

Blinken emphasized the US's support for the people of South Korea and the continuation of the alliance between the two countries, which is based on the principles of democracy and the rule of law.

The martial law decision sparked major reactions across the country. Opposition parties harshly criticized Yoon's decision and called on the President to resign.
