Van decision sparks unrest in Yüksekova: 29 detained
Following the revocation of the restored rights of Abdullah Zeydan, who was elected as the Mayor of Van Metropolitan Municipality, 29 people were detained by security forces after protests broke out in the Yüksekova district of Hakkari.
Citizens in the Yüksekova district protested the revocation of the restored rights of DEM Party Van Metropolitan Municipality mayoral candidate Abdullah Zeydan.
Police intervened with tear gas against a crowd that began marching in the city center. Water cannons (TOMA) were used to spray the crowd.
As the crowd fled into side streets due to the tear gas, shopkeepers closed their shutters because of the ongoing incidents. It was learned that 29 protesters were detained as the events continued until late hours in the district.
The investigation into the incidents is ongoing.
