Verdict hearing in Ankara Train Station bombing trial postponed
No verdict was reached in the trial concerning the massacre caused by the ISIS attack at the Ankara Train Station on October 10. The next hearing has been postponed to July 1.
The trial of 26 defendants, 10 of whom are in custody, regarding the attack carried out by the terrorist organization ISIS in front of the Ankara Train Station on October 10, 2015, which resulted in the deaths of 101 people, continued following the Court of Cassation's reversal decision.
The next hearing of the case, in which no verdict was reached, will be held on July 1.
HISTORY OF THE CASE
The indictment prepared by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the terrorist attack was accepted by the Ankara 4th High Criminal Court on July 13, 2016, and the first hearing was held on November 7, 2016.
As a result of the trial, the court reached a verdict on August 3, 2018, sentencing 9 defendants to 101 aggravated life sentences each—one for the crime of "violating the constitutional order" and 100 each for the "intentional killing of 100 people"—and ruled to separate the files of the 16 fugitive defendants in the case.
A criminal complaint was also filed for the trial of defendant Ekici, who was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the crime of "being an executive of an armed terrorist organization," on charges of "violating the constitutional order," "intentional killing of 100 people," and "attempted murder" regarding the complainants injured in the terrorist act.
The 3rd Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation partially reversed the file regarding some defendants. The chamber also overturned the conviction established against Ekici for the charge of "establishing and managing an armed terrorist organization," stating that Ekici should be tried for "intentional killing" and "crimes against humanity."
During the proceedings, the Ankara 4th High Criminal Court merged the case against Ekici, the case involving the 16 fugitive defendants related to the attack, and the cases opened against 9 individuals, bringing the number of defendants in the trial to 26.
The number of victims rose to 101 after one person later passed away due to injuries sustained in the attack.
