Verdict reached in incident-filled derby

The verdict has been announced in the trial concerning the incidents that took place after the Galatasaray–Fenerbahçe derby played during the 2023–2024 Süper Lig season. The case, in which 5 defendants including Fenerbahçe players Jaden Quinn Oosterwolde and Mert Hakan Yandaş were tried, was heard in Istanbul.

In the case file, prison sentences of up to three years, four months, and 15 days had been requested for the defendants.

MERT HAKAN ATTENDED THE HEARING FROM PRISON

Fenerbahçe player Mert Hakan Yandaş, who is currently detained as part of a betting investigation, attended the hearing from the prison in Silivri via the SEGBİS video conferencing system.

COURT ISSUES PRISON SENTENCE

The court sentenced Jaden Quinn Oosterwolde, Mert Hakan Yandaş, Fenerbahçe club doctor Ertuğrul Karanlık, club executive Hulusi Belgü, and Emre Kartal, the son of manager İsmail Kartal, to 1 year, 4 months, and 11 days in prison for the crime of "causing injury resulting in a bone fracture through joint participation under unjust provocation."

PRONOUNCEMENT OF THE VERDICT DEFERRED

The court panel decided to defer the pronouncement of the verdict (HAGB) for the defendants. In accordance with this decision, the prison sentences will not be executed; however, the defendants must not commit the same crime within the specified probation period.

In addition to Oosterwolde and Mert Hakan Yandaş, club doctor Ertuğrul Karanlık, executive Hulusi Belgü, and Emre Kartal were also sentenced to prison for the same crime and for the same duration.

WHAT HAPPENED ON THE NIGHT OF THE DERBY?

An indictment had been prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the events that occurred after the Galatasaray–Fenerbahçe derby. Following the match played in the 37th week of the Süper Lig, the Fenerbahçe technical staff, executives, and players had entered the pitch to celebrate their victory.

During this time, tension arose on the pitch due to the intervention of Galatasaray staff, and the events escalated quickly.

DETAILS IN THE INDICTMENT

In the indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office;

Ali Çelikkıran (stadium manager) was listed as the complainant,

Jaden Quinn Oosterwolde, Mert Hakan Yandaş, Ertuğrul Karanlık, Hulusi Belgü, and Emre Kartal were listed as suspects.

The indictment stated that Ali Çelikkıran was diagnosed with a "cervical vertebra (neck) fracture" following the events.

CHARGES FILED

The following charges were brought against the five suspects:

Intentional injury resulting in a bone fracture or dislocation in the body

Causing disorder in sports areas and damaging facilities
