Verdict reached in İzmir electrocution tragedy trial: Continued detention ordered!

The trial of 42 defendants, including 13 in custody, regarding the deaths of Özge Ceren Deniz and İnanç Öktemay, who lost their lives after stepping into a puddle and being electrocuted during a downpour in İzmir's Alsancak district on July 12, began today at the 10th High Criminal Court.

PROSECUTION'S OPINION: DETENTION MUST CONTINUE

According to the report by Oktay Güçtekin from Ege'den Sonsöz; due to the high number of defendants, the statements of the 13 detained defendants were taken on the first day of the trial. Today, the defendants being tried without detention are providing their statements. Both detained and non-detained defendants took their places in court.

The prosecution submitted its opinion regarding the case. In its opinion, the prosecution requested that the detained defendants remain in custody due to the suspicion of flight risk and tampering with evidence. The prosecution also requested the continuation of judicial control measures for the defendants being tried without detention.

The prosecution's opinion is as follows:

It is requested that the correspondence written to the relevant institutions in the file be awaited, that the clients' request to join the case as victims be accepted, that the İzmir Bar Association's request to join the case be rejected as it is understood they did not suffer damage from the crime, that the statements of the defendants understood to have knowledge of the incident be recorded, that the footage submitted to the file during the trial phase be examined, that a crime scene investigation be conducted after the defendant defenses, that a preliminary expert report be obtained with the new evidence entering the file, that the request of some defense attorneys be rejected as the crime is not one specific only to public officials, and that, given the nature and character of the crime charged against the detained defendants, the fact that the other defendants' defenses have not yet been taken, and the suspicion of flight risk and tampering with evidence, the detention of the defendants be continued and judicial control measures be maintained.

INTERIM DECISION REACHED

In the interim decision issued by the court, it was ruled that the defendants' detention shall continue.
