Verdict reached in the murder case of Nurcan Arslan, who was killed with 11 bullets: Sentence reduction for 'good conduct'

The trial of the defendant who murdered his ex-girlfriend, Nurcan Arslan, with 11 bullets in Istanbul's Küçükçekmece district on January 30, 2016, after she refused his reconciliation offer, has reached a verdict. The defendant, who was being tried on charges of aggravated life imprisonment, was sentenced to 25 years in prison following a reduction for good conduct. Following the Court of Cassation's third reversal of the decision, the court initially sentenced the defendant, Abdullah Melih Barış, to life imprisonment for the crime of 'intentional killing'. On January 30, 2016, in Küçükçekmece, Abdullah Melih Barış (39) killed his girlfriend, Nurcan Arslan, with 11 bullets after she refused his reconciliation offer. The Court of Cassation, which reviewed the decision to initially sentence Abdullah Melih Barış to aggravated life imprisonment for 'premeditated intentional killing' and subsequently reduce it to life imprisonment due to good conduct, overturned the decision for the third time on the grounds that "the crime was not premeditated." Following this, the defendant, Abdullah Melih Barış, who is in custody, attended the hearing held again at the Bakırköy 13th High Criminal Court via the Audio and Video Information System (SEGBİS). Some of the complainants and the parties' lawyers were also present at the hearing.

It was stated that the defendant had planned the event in advance and fired at Arslan after pulling out his unlicensed pistol.

During the hearing, the Public Prosecutor presented his opinion on the merits. The opinion stated that after his girlfriend, Nurcan Arslan, wanted to break up with him, the defendant, Abdullah Melih Barış, came to Istanbul from Tokat, where he resided, and planned to shoot and kill Nurcan Arslan with an unlicensed pistol he brought with him if he could not persuade her. The opinion stated that on January 30, 2016, around 11:00, Barış and Arslan argued in front of a housing complex in Halkalı, that Arslan told Barış, "I want to leave," and that Barış replied, "Please, we will just talk, we will eat and then leave.".

The opinion further stated that when Arslan wanted to return, Barış tried to persuade her, that he could not persuade her, that the defendant had planned the event in advance, and that he pulled out his unlicensed pistol from his waistband and fired at the young woman.

The opinion stated that Barış called the police teams, said he had wounded someone with a gun and would surrender, and reported his location; that he was subsequently taken into custody by police teams with the unlicensed pistol, and that Arslan lost her life as a result of the injury.

DEMAND FOR AGGRAVATED LIFE IMPRISONMENT
