Verdict reached in the Saraçhane case

The Istanbul 61st Criminal Court of First Instance has reached a significant verdict in the 110-defendant Saraçhane case. The court ruled for the acquittal of 109 defendants and decided to evaluate the file of one defendant separately.

THE ARREST OF İMAMOĞLU AND THE OUTBREAK OF PROTESTS

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor and presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu was taken into custody on March 19, 2025, and arrested on March 23. Following İmamoğlu's arrest, citizens in Istanbul began protesting the AKP government by exercising their constitutional rights. The protests, which began when students at Istanbul University broke through police barricades, spread across the country in a short time.

The most intense demonstrations in Istanbul took place in the Saraçhane area. In this area, which is the administrative center of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB), many people who participated in the protests were detained and arrested. Some citizens who remained in prison for months were released in recent months.

ACQUITTAL VERDICT DELIVERED AT THE HEARING

The hearing for the case filed against 110 people regarding the Saraçhane protests was held at the Istanbul 61st Criminal Court of First Instance. With the verdict announced today, 109 defendants were acquitted. The court decided to separate the file of one defendant to be evaluated separately.
