700 weeks of resistance... 'Haydarpaşa is a station, and it will remain a station'
The vigil launched against the privatization of Haydarpaşa Station, one of Istanbul's iconic structures, has reached its 700th week. The Haydarpaşa Solidarity emphasized that they will continue their determined struggle to ensure the historic station remains public property. The vigil, held every Sunday since 2012 with the demand that Haydarpaşa Station be preserved as a public cultural and transportation hub, took place for the 700th time this week. Citizens, civil society representatives, and professional chambers gathered in front of the station in Kadıköy, holding signs and chanting, "Haydarpaşa Station belongs to the people, it cannot be sold!"
In the statement made on behalf of the solidarity group, it was pointed out that Haydarpaşa is not just a train station, but also the memory of Istanbul and the gateway of Anatolia opening to Istanbul. Mücella Yapıcı read the statement.
The statement included the following remarks:
“We have been here for 700 weeks. Because this station is not just a place where tracks intersect; it is a stop for laborers, students, immigrants, and countless stories. Haydarpaşa should belong to the people, not to rent-seeking. Every week, what brings us together here is not just the memories of the past, but the legacy of the future.”
The event featured musical performances and short speeches. Representatives from institutions such as TMMOB, KESK, TTB, and DİSK also supported the solidarity action. Following the statement, a giant banner prepared specifically for the 700th week was unfurled on the station stairs. Participants emphasized that the station should be repurposed as a "culture, arts, and transportation center."
The protest was attended by Kadıköy Mayor Mesut Kösedağı, CHP Sivas Deputy Ulaş Karasu, CHP Kadıköy District Chair Ali Narin, architect Mücella Yapıcı, members of the Left Party (SOL Parti) and the Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP), the United Transport Workers' Union (BTS), and numerous residents of Kadıköy. During the action, signs reading "Freedom for Can Atalay" and "We will bring Can back" were also displayed for Can Atalay, who is imprisoned at Marmara Prison and whose parliamentary seat was revoked.
