Academic's 'secular caliphate' remarks back on the agenda

A speech by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Naciye Selin Şenocak from Istanbul Aydın University, in which she introduced the concept of a 'secular caliphate,' has become a topic of discussion on social media. 

In the remarks that have resurfaced, the statement, “The institution of the Caliphate should be rethought and implemented in a secular manner,” draws attention.

The following statements are included in the speech made in 2015: 

"The point I especially want to underline is that the caliphate should be brought back to the agenda and that this should be done under Turkey's leadership. 

Within the framework of an Islamic Union Organization, an organization is needed where Muslim countries come together—that is, an organization that will regulate the distorted structures within, whether it be against threats directed at them or for the protection of their rights, through political cooperation among Muslim countries. 

Turkey could lead this because it still exists in Parliament. Just like in the UN, Muslim countries would come together. One would have a say in the decision-making and political mechanisms of these countries. We are not talking about a religious caliphate institution. It is a structure. A structure where Muslim countries are together. Because there is strength in unity."
