A video filmed during the visit of Alper Gezeravcı, who went to space as Turkey's first astronaut with the Axiom-3 (Ax-3) mission, to Anıtkabir, the eternal resting place of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, on November 10, has been shared on social media.
In the video, which includes footage of Gezeravcı at Anıtkabir, he read the message he wrote in the Anıtkabir memorial book. In his message, Gezeravcı stated: “Founder of our Republic, our Great Leader Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk; today, as a Turkish citizen following in your footsteps and as the astronaut of Turkey's first manned space mission, I stand before you on the 100th anniversary of our Republic with the good news that we have opened the door to the sky and space on the path you set for us. I am experiencing the pride of carrying our crescent-and-star flag to where it deserves to be, to space. Since the day you laid the foundations of our Republic, our country has grown and developed with your inspiring ideals. Now, with confident and determined steps, we as the Turkish nation are advancing toward becoming a respected power in science and technology on the international stage. This journey I will take to space will be a reflection not just of an individual, but of our nation's perseverance and determination. With the honor and pride of being the first Turkish citizen to go to space, I bow before your cherished memory with gratitude and longing.”
