A remarkable theft occurred recently at the Şirinyer Mosque, located in the Şirintepe neighborhood of the Tepebaşı district. According to allegations, an unidentified person or persons entered the mosque in the early hours of the morning by opening a window on the second floor. In footage captured by security cameras, one of the suspects was seen heading downstairs to the locked staff room. The individual, who kicked the door and spent a long time working on it with a tool in his hand, eventually broke the door and entered. Finding no valuables in the room, the thief proceeded toward the interior of the mosque.

MOVED COMFORTABLY INSIDE THE MOSQUE

The individual, who wandered around the mosque for a while, went to the water dispenser and took the money collected for purchasing water. Afterward, he drank juice and ate cake left over from a previous religious service (mevlit) held at the mosque. After eating his food, the suspect left his trash inside the mosque and headed to the dispenser to drink water. The individual, who spent some more time inside, went back up to the second floor where he had arrived, exited through the window, and disappeared.

"THERE WAS 500-600 LIRA FOR WATER, THEY STOLE IT"

76-year-old Osman Kıran, who has been attending the mosque for years, said, "I didn't notice because the door was broken. Afterward, they called the imam because the door was open and things were scattered. They had rolled up the carpet, and it seems they had pulled it under the table a bit. After the steel door was installed, a small gap remained. The thieves stepped on the door and climbed up with a screwdriver. There was 500-600 lira for water near the combi boiler; they stole that. The footprints are visible on the floor; I already pointed this out to the police. They drank the juice and left their trash next to the water dispenser. They also left our religious books in a scattered state," he said.
