A rescue operation has been launched for the crew of a 69-meter-long cargo ship that began taking on water and sank southwest of İmralı Island in the Sea of Marmara.

In a statement issued by the General Directorate of Coastal Safety, it was noted that the 69-meter-long general cargo ship named "BATUHAN A", which began taking on water southwest of the island, prompted the immediate dispatch of KEGM-6 and KIYEM-4 fast rescue boats belonging to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure's General Directorate of Coastal Safety to the scene.

Bursa Governor Mahmut Demirtaş stated that following the incident, two teams from the General Directorate of Coastal Safety, as well as a team from the Bandırma district of Balıkesir, were sent to the region.

Governor Demirtaş said, "Intensive efforts are underway to rescue the 6 crew members, who are believed to be Turkish citizens, from the ship that took on water and sank."

Reporting that wave heights in the area where the ship sank are approaching 3 meters, Demirtaş stated that the Coast Guard Command is coordinating the operations from its facility in the Mudanya district.

Demirtaş added that teams from the Coast Guard Command and the General Directorate of Coastal Safety are continuing their work in the region.
