Counterfeit dollar fraud at ATM

Bank officials in Istanbul reported to the police after discovering that 33 100-dollar bills (totaling 3,300 dollars) withdrawn from a bank ATM were counterfeit. Police detained 11 suspects, including 2 women, following their investigation.

Officials from a private bank who applied to the Istanbul Public Security Branch Office Fraud Bureau filed a complaint, stating that 33 100-dollar bills deposited into an ATM were counterfeit.

CENTRAL BANK ISSUED COUNTERFEIT DOLLAR REPORT

The teams sent the money retrieved from the ATM to the Central Bank to determine whether it was counterfeit. The report received confirmed that the bills were fake.

SECURITY CAMERA FOOTAGE EXAMINED

The Public Security Branch Office Fraud Bureau teams examined the security camera footage of the ATM from which the counterfeit dollars were retrieved. The investigation revealed that between August 27 and August 29, 2023, 33 counterfeit 100-dollar bills were inserted into the ATM's cash deposit slot using fraudulent methods, allowing the suspects to obtain illicit gains. It was determined that the 33 100-dollar bills placed in the ATM's cash deposit slot were counterfeit and that these funds were converted into Turkish Lira via mobile banking transactions and then transferred to the accounts of third parties.

SIMULTANEOUS OPERATION CONDUCTED

Identifying the suspects as part of the investigation, the teams detained 11 suspects, including 2 women, in a simultaneous operation. The suspects were referred to the courthouse after their statements were taken.

Of the suspects whose procedures at the courthouse were completed, 4 were arrested. 5 people were released under judicial control.

The other 2 people were released after their statements were taken by the prosecutor's office.
