Yeşilay Scientific Board Member Prof. Dr. Recep Erol Sezer stated at a program held at the Kırklareli University Culture Center, where the harms of tobacco were discussed, that much more serious measures must be taken against smoking in Turkey and around the world.

Stating that smoking is almost the sole cause of lung cancer, Sezer reported that this type of cancer is spreading rapidly in Turkey.

"THE LIFE EXPECTANCY LOST BY A SMOKER IS 15 YEARS"

Emphasizing that the treatment of lung cancer is very expensive and problematic in terms of success, Sezer said, "We are facing such a problem. We have a lung cancer problem raining down on us; 25 thousand people die from lung cancer every year. The average life expectancy lost by a smoker is 15 years. The 5 most fatal cancers in Turkey are all linked to smoking."

World Health Organization Turkey Program Director Prof. Dr. Toker Ergüder stated that increasing prices on tobacco and tobacco products is important for deterrence.

Noting that cigarette prices in Turkey remain at low levels when compared to other countries, Ergüder pointed out that Turkey is currently among the countries with the highest smoking rates.

THEY SMOKED DURING THE BREAK

Kırklareli Governor Birol Ekici, Kırklareli University Rector Prof. Dr. Bülent Şengörür, and Provincial Health Director Çiğdem Cerit also gave speeches explaining the dangers of smoking.

It was noted that the majority of those attending the panel, which was given a short break after the speeches, went outside the hall to smoke.
