Historian Prof. Dr. Emrah Safa Gürkan targeted on social media: The Ottoman debate...

Historian Prof. Dr. Emrah Safa Gürkan covered Timur in a New Year's special for his YouTube program titled Omnibus, where he discusses historical figures and events.

In the program, Prof. Dr. Gürkan, who primarily discussed Timur, touched upon the points where he differed from Genghis Khan and drew attention to his relations with the Ottoman Empire, also including his correspondence with Bayezid I based on historical documents.

A portion of Prof. Dr. Gürkan's remarks regarding Bayezid I, in which he emphasized Timur's political and military standing, was shared on social media.

In the videos circulated with the claim that he 'insulted the Ottomans,' Prof. Dr. Gürkan said the following:

"-Bayezid I used the title of Khan; the man says, 'I don't use the title of Khan, who are you?' Who is Bayezid I, really?

-Well, professor, would he need to get permission from somewhere to use such titles?

-The title of Sultan, of course, not everyone can use it. You have to be a Genghisid.

-But ours come from the Oghuz, etc...

-There is no such thing; where did they come from the Oghuz? They are all horse thieves. They didn't come from the Oghuz or anything; they made it up later.

-He looks at the Ottoman as a man to whom Ali Selçuk gave land."

WHO IS EMRAH SAFA GÜRKAN?

Emrah Safa Gürkan was born on January 16, 1981, in the Değirmendere district of Kocaeli. He graduated from the Department of International Relations at Bilkent University in 2003. In 2006, he received his master's degree from the same university with his thesis titled "Ottoman Corsairs in the Western Mediterranean and Their Place in the Ottoman-Habsburg Rivalry, 1505-1535," written under the supervision of Halil İnalcık.

Subsequently, he received his doctorate in 2012 with his thesis titled "Espionage in the 16th Century Mediterranean: Secret Diplomacy, Mediterranean Go-Betweens and the Ottoman-Habsburg Rivalry," written with Gábor Ágoston at Georgetown University, and attained the title of professor in 2021.

Gürkan also broadcasts on YouTube. He is also known on social media as "ESG," an abbreviation of Emrah Safa Gürkan.
