Istanbul Mayor İmamoğlu responds to citizen who confronted him: 'You are quite ugly'

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu attended the SAHA EXPO 2024 Defense, Aviation and Space Industry Fair held at the Istanbul Expo Center (İFM).

At the fairgrounds, İmamoğlu placed carnations in front of a giant screen displaying the photos of the 5 martyrs who lost their lives in the terrorist attack on the Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ) campus in Ankara's Kahramankazan district, and subsequently visited the TUSAŞ stand.

"THIS ATTACK IS AN ATTACK ON OUR NATION"

In a statement to the press following his visit, İmamoğlu wished mercy upon the martyrs and said, "Protecting our unity and solidarity as a country is the greatest patriotic duty of us all."

Emphasizing that the defense industry is a sector that serves as the guarantor of Turkey's independence, İmamoğlu stated, "Founded in 1973, TUSAŞ has been serving our country for over 50 years. The fact that it is an institution belonging to our nation and our Armed Forces is also a source of pride for us. The expression 'In spite of the traitors, we will work more, we will produce more,' voiced by TUSAŞ employees immediately after losing their colleagues in the attack, is beyond everything."

Underlining that struggles regarding national issues must be waged together, İmamoğlu said, "We are in a period where we must never act with individual attitudes or treat these issues as political material. This attack on the defense industry is an attack on our nation."

A PERSON REACTED: 'WHO WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS'

During his visit, while he was stopped by participants requesting photos, a person confronted İmamoğlu.

Upon the citizen calling out, "You were side-by-side with Abdullah Zeydan (Van Metropolitan Municipality Mayor) yesterday," İmamoğlu brought his hand to his mouth and blew a kiss to the citizen twice.

Continuing to call out to İmamoğlu, the citizen emphasized the 5 martyrs at TUSAŞ and said, "Who will be held accountable for this? He is walking around here, but our soldiers were martyred. You hosted Zeydan in your office yesterday."

"YOU ARE QUITE UGLY"

İmamoğlu replied, "Calm down, we will talk when the time comes. You keep on doing politics, my lion. You continue your ugly politics. You are quite ugly."

İmamoğlu, who also visited other stands, later left the fairgrounds.
