Nuri Gökhan Bozkır, a suspect in the assassination of Necip Hablemitoğlu, has been captured

Former captain Nuri Gökhan Bozkır, a defendant in the case regarding the murder of Ankara University faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Necip Hablemitoğlu in front of his home on December 18, 2002, who had become a fugitive after being released following his return to Turkey in 2022 via a MİT operation, has been captured again.

FUGITIVE SUSPECT CAPTURED AGAIN

The following statement regarding the operation was shared on the General Directorate of Security's social media accounts:

"Nuri Gökhan Bozkır, one of the suspects in the murder of Necip Hablemitoğlu on 18.12.2002, who had an active UYAP arrest warrant for 'providing weapons to terrorist organizations' and 'premeditated murder,' was captured on 02.01.2024 as a result of a joint operation conducted by the Ankara Police Department's Counter-Terrorism Branch and Intelligence Branch. Respectfully announced to the public."

WHO IS NECİP HABLEMİTOĞLU?

Necip Hablemitoğlu (November 28, 1954, Ankara - December 18, 2002, Ankara) was a Turkish historian and author.

Married and a father of two daughters, Necip Hablemitoğlu conducted studies on the recent history of Turkic communities outside of Turkey. He carried out field studies on Turkish works, Turkish minorities, and Turkish martyrs' cemeteries in Central Europe and the Balkans, and played an active role in various projects on these subjects. Hablemitoğlu, who authored numerous books and articles in his field, served as an associate professor at Ankara University for twenty years, teaching courses on Atatürk's principles and the history of the revolution until his murder on December 18, 2002.

HOW DID THE ASSASSINATION OF NECİP HABLEMİTOĞLU TAKE PLACE?

Dr. Necip Hablemitoğlu passed away on December 18, 2002, as a result of an armed attack he suffered in front of his home. His book titled "Köstebek" (The Mole) was published posthumously. Following the murder, threatening phone calls received on Hablemitoğlu's email and phone were taken by police officers for investigation. As a result of a lawsuit filed by his family against the Ministry of Interior at the Ankara 5th Administrative Court, the Ministry of Interior was ordered to pay 40 thousand lira in non-pecuniary damages. In its defense, the Ministry of Interior stated that it considered Hablemitoğlu's murder an "ordinary murder case." Furthermore, even 7 years after the murder, the Ministry of Interior reported that the "preparatory investigation" was still ongoing.

Many claims have been made regarding his death. According to one theory, he was killed by German GSG 9 teams due to his research on Bergama and German foundations. According to another theory, Hablemitoğlu was killed because of his sensitivity regarding secularism.

Another view suggests that Hablemitoğlu was killed by the Ergenekon organization. By pinning the crime on the Islamic segment, they both camouflaged themselves and provoked the secular segment. According to this view, which was also voiced by witnesses in court during the Ergenekon trial, Necip Hablemitoğlu was killed on December 18, 2002. His last research before his death was on the activities of German foundations in Turkey. Hablemitoğlu was going to disclose new and very important information he had reached in the German foundations file he was working on 8 days later, on December 26, 2002, at the 'German Foundations' trial with 15 defendants, which was set to begin at the Ankara No. 1 State Security Court.

Ankara University faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Necip Hablemitoğlu, who was alleged to have reached very important information through his research that German foundations were conducting illegal activities in Turkey, fueling ethnic and sectarian divisions, and organizing anti-gold mine protesters, was killed in an armed attack in front of his home one week before the trial where these allegations were to be addressed.

Those who claim that the Ergenekon organization had a hand in Hablemitoğlu's death also point to details such as the revelation that a fake passport was given to fugitive Ergenekon defendant Bedrettin Dalan by the German state, and the documentation that financial aid was provided to Ergenekon defendants by German foundations, arguing that the organization's ties to Germany were very strong.
