Özgür Çelik puts an end to 'suitcase' reports about İmamoğlu: He reveals what was inside

Çelik made statements at the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) building in Saraçhane regarding the "suitcase and camera covering" footage of İBB Mayor and CHP presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu, which was circulated by media outlets close to the government.

Özgür Çelik first spoke about the footage of the camera being covered with tape:

“Let us explain the camera covering issue. The Turkish public will remember that footage of a meeting Ekrem İmamoğlu held with a journalist at a hotel between the two elections in 2019 was leaked. Again, recently, on a snowy day in Istanbul, footage of Ekrem İmamoğlu dining at a fish restaurant was presented to the public.

Following these incidents, İmamoğlu's security team felt the need to cover cameras only in areas where meetings were held. If the cameras in the entire hotel had been covered, there would not have been any footage of Mr. İmamoğlu entering or leaving the premises.

In the context of the protection of personal data, it is an extremely normal practice to cover cameras in rooms where meetings are held. It is natural for a person whose footage was previously leaked from another hotel and restaurant to take such precautions for security reasons.

THERE ARE SIGNAL JAMMERS

According to the report by Engin Deniz İpek from Cumhuriyet, Çelik also spoke about the suitcase-carrying footage reflected in the records, stating that there were signal jammers inside the suitcases.

Opening the two suitcases he brought with him to show the signal jammers to the public, Çelik said, “What is inside these suitcases? The suitcases contain signal jamming devices. These devices are used by security teams during meetings. Why are they carried in a suitcase? Because these devices weigh 20-25 kilos and are difficult to carry by hand. That is why the security teams use suitcases,” he stated.

Continuing his remarks by asking, “So why does Ekrem İmamoğlu use a signal jammer?” Çelik stated that İmamoğlu has a special protection order issued by the Ministry of Interior and four police bodyguards.

Çelik continued his words as follows:

"Did the public not discuss for days on television the allegation of an assassination attempt by a terrorist organization against Ekrem İmamoğlu? As a name who has demolished rent-seeking areas in Istanbul and received terror threats, it is highly understandable to use signal jamming devices for both his own security and the security of those with him. These devices in the suitcases are used for security purposes.

THOSE WHO HIDE MONEY IN SHOEBOXES...

Some people, those who hide money in shoeboxes or carry other things in suitcases, may come up with such slanders and smears. However, we state this clearly: Neither your slander, nor your mud, nor your lies will stick to Ekrem İmamoğlu.”
