Striking comments from Prof. Dr. Celal Şengör on the Santorini earthquakes: 'Goodbye to us all'

The seismic activity occurring on the Greek island of Santorini, right next to Turkey, continues to be a subject of debate. More than 400 earthquakes have occurred in the region in the last week. Many of the earthquakes have a magnitude of over 4.0. Prof. Dr. Celal Şengör evaluated these earthquakes centered in the Aegean Sea.

"THE VOLCANO THERE IS ALREADY ACTIVE"

Şengör came to the city as a guest of the Muğla Metropolitan Municipality. Evaluating the earthquakes in the Aegean Sea, Şengör said, "I learned what kind of earthquakes they are and their depths; they are 7 kilometers. So, this is a normal depth, something expected. But what kind of earthquakes are they? And where exactly are they clustering? Honestly, the volcano there is already active."

Continuing his speech, Şengör drew attention with the words, "But if that place erupts, it's goodbye to us all," and continued as follows:

"What are the types of earthquakes? I would very much like to see that. I assume our people will perform the fault plane solutions for them. We need to get that in time. It is not possible to say anything yet.

WILL THERE BE A TSUNAMI?

There is one thing that can be said now. How do these look on the map? Each of the faults here is a normal fault. All of these cause tsunamis. Because for a tsunami to occur, there must be a displacement on the seabed. The topography must change.

For example, Istanbul is not like that. The fault in Istanbul is a strike-slip fault. The tsunami danger there only occurs if there is a landslide. But when a landslide occurs, it can reach up to 7 meters there, I mean."
