Teacher saves student's life with 'Heimlich maneuver'

At the Şehit Ümit Karamustafa Secondary School in the Fatsa district, 7th-grade student Yiğit Efe Ö. (12) went out into the hallway and approached his friends after food became lodged in his windpipe during a break.

When his friends realized the situation, they took the student by the arm and alerted their teachers.

At that moment, Ali Rıza Bölükbaş, a Religious Culture and Moral Knowledge teacher waiting in the school hallway, noticed the student's condition and intervened with the 'Heimlich maneuver,' allowing the student to breathe again.

QUICK INTERVENTION SAVED A LIFE

Stating that he had received first aid training for such incidents, Religious Culture and Moral Knowledge teacher Ali Rıza Bölükbaş said, “I had performed ablution for Friday prayers during the lunch hour and was waiting there. At that moment, students came running to me, and one student was approaching while holding his throat; he had turned completely purple.

Because we had previously received first aid training, I intervened immediately. With the Heimlich maneuver, the object lodged in his windpipe came out right away. Afterward, the child took a deep breath. Once the situation returned to normal, there was no need for medical teams. My presence there at that moment was a coincidence, but all of our teachers would have done the same thing,” he said.

"HE SAID, 'I OWE YOU MY LIFE'"

Highlighting the importance of the first aid training that the Ministry provides mandatorily every 2 years, Bölükbaş added, “I spoke with the student afterward, and he hugged me and said, ‘Teacher, I owe you my life.’ I didn't recognize the child when I saw him; he normally has a fair complexion, but he had turned purple at that moment.”

Meanwhile, the moment of the incident was captured on the school's security camera. The footage shows the student, who was struggling to breathe, running to his teacher while holding his throat with the help of his friends, and the teacher, who noticed the situation, performing the Heimlich maneuver to help the student breathe again.
